Introduction:
An exotic experience which shifts your mind to another place. Cassis, current, blackberry and cherry. White pepper, ground herbs and the strong floral perfume of crushed violets. Light and elegant but structured with a fresh acidity.
A Wine Made Possible by South African Generosity:
This Syrah is made with generous donations of fruit of some of the best Syrah sites across South Africa. Roundstone, Swartland; Reyneke, Stellenbosch; Groot Constantia; as well as the notable Elgin cool-climate vineyards usually found in Lismore Syrah. A fire destroyed Lismore in December 2019 and the South African wine industry immediately donated fruit, barrels and cellar space to make this wine possible. It is a wine that speaks of South Africa’s soul, one that tells its story in the glass.
Winemakers’ Notes:
The grapes were picked at ripeness levels that retained a natural freshness. 50% whole bunch fermented in small batch vats with gentle punch downs twice a day and then finished with a 14-day extended maceration before the free run juice was drained and the skins and whole bunches were pressed in a traditional wooden basket press. The process allowed for a long and gentle extraction period which softens the wine and lends to the fruit expression and structure. The wine was racked into 225, 300 and 500 litre barrels where malolactic fermentation took place, and the wine was aged for 12 months. 20% new French oak was used.
Time in the bottle will allow integration, the deepening of layers and full expression of the fruit.
