Go to the shopHartenberg Gravel Hill 2021 comes from a small Syrah parcel on the lower slopes of the estate. Its distinctive ground layers iron-rich stones over fine clay. As the clay cracks in dry conditions, it holds water for the vines; when it swells again with rain, it can restrict root growth. This interplay helps shape the site’s distinctive expression.
Hartenberg’s Shiraz story reaches back to 1968, when it became the first South African producer to bottle the variety. Gravel Hill holds a special place in that history: the estate describes it as the country’s first single-vineyard wine. Its first ten vintages were sold through the Cape Winemakers Guild, before it returned to Hartenberg as a flagship in 2005.
Give this wine time and a little quiet. Pour it with a slow-cooked supper, let the conversation wander, and return to the glass as its layers gradually come into focus.
TASTING NOTES
Violet and perfumed aromas lead, with white pepper adding a lifted, savoury edge. On the palate, fine-grained tannins give the wine a poised, classically structured feel, while the stone-influenced character brings a firm, mineral thread through the finish. Let it unfold slowly in the glass alongside a generous meal.
FOOD PAIRING
Try grilled lamb chops with rosemary, where the herbs echo the wine’s savoury side; slow-braised beef short ribs, for a hearty match to its structure; or a wild mushroom and lentil pie, whose earthy flavours make a satisfying companion.
