Ken Mackenzie bought the farm Hartenberg in 1987. He wanted to follow the vision that Eleanor Finlayson had, he wanted to produce extraordinary wines. But he did not only reach this, Hartenberg became as well a home for winelovers from all over the world.
The name Hartenberg comes from the Africaans language and means "heart of the mountain"
The wine farm is situated in the Stellenbosch region, about 54 km east from Cape Town. A total of 150 hectares and two third under vine. Nine different soil types and very different micro climatic conditions make the wines so special. Each grape variety gets the perfect location.
Carl Schultz is since 1993 the cellar master and under his guidance Hartenberg Estate became one of the leading wine estates in South Africa. With the Shiraz Stork 2008 Hartenberg won the competition Syrah du Monde 2012 in France. For the Merlot 2005 Carl Schultz received the "Winemaker of the Year" award. And only recently the Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 won the international trophy at the Decanter World Wine Awards in the category Best Bordeaux Varietal.
In 2008, Hartenberg produced the premium Cabernet Sauvignon for House of Mandela.
Carl Schultz is also member of the Cape Winemakers Guild.
Hartenberg is hosting the yearly "Riesling Rocks" event every February. Hartenberg and other South African wineries are coming to Hartenberg Estate to show their selection of Riesling.
