Hartenberg Wine Estate The Mackenzie 2022 puts Cabernet Sauvignon at the centre of a four-variety Stellenbosch blend: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 4% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It spent 18 months in French oak, including 40% new barrels. Named for the Mackenzie family, the wine connects what is in the glass to the people who shaped the estate’s recent history. A 97-point Platinum medal at the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards and 96 points from Tim Atkin make this a compelling bottle to discover.
Hartenberg’s recorded history reaches back to 1692, when its first settlers began cultivating the land and planting vines. Ken Mackenzie bought the estate on 1 January 1987. His family subsequently invested in replanting vineyards, developing production facilities and building staff skills. Against that longer history, The Mackenzie gives a personal name to a Cabernet-led blend from Stellenbosch: a wine with a clear connection to its estate, yet plenty to say for itself in the glass.
Bring it to the table for a slow evening meal. Pour a glass, settle in and leave room to notice the fruit and savoury notes as they unfold.
TASTING NOTES
Hartenberg Wine Estate The Mackenzie 2022 opens with plum, cranberry and raspberry, followed by hints of fynbos and mocha. Darker fruit comes forward on the palate, carried by a generous texture rather than sheer weight. Polished tannins give the wine shape through a lingering, composed finish. Its brighter berry aromas offer an appealing contrast to the deeper fruit.
FOOD PAIRING
Try roast leg of lamb with rosemary: the wine’s dark fruit suits the meat, while its savoury notes meet the herbs. Sirloin with a red-wine jus gives the tannins something rich to work alongside. For a meat-free dish, choose mushroom and lentil pie for its earthy depth.
