Description

Hartenberg Wine Estate Sacred Soil 2023 puts the estate’s approach to vineyard soil at the centre of the wine. Hartenberg farms regeneratively, using practices that include cover crops and managed grazing. This Stellenbosch red brings together 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc. It spent 15 months in French oak barrels, a quarter of them new, giving its dark fruit a measured frame rather than hiding it.

The estate lies on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, where its history reaches back to land cultivated in 1692. Today, Hartenberg describes soil health as central to its farming. Its viticulturist began experimenting with purpose-selected, mixed cover crops in 2010, and cattle were introduced in 2017. Sacred Soil gives that continuing work a name on the bottle, linking a classic three-grape blend to the way its vineyards are tended.

Bring it to a table set for a long evening: a generous dish in the middle, glasses within reach and time enough to notice how the fruit, spice and savoury finish unfold.

TASTING NOTES
Hartenberg Wine Estate Sacred Soil 2023 opens with blackcurrant and ripe plum, followed by hints of leather and warming spice. Dark berry fruit gives the palate a generous feel, while fine tannins and balanced acidity keep it composed. A touch of vanilla softens the edges before a lingering, savoury finish with a final trace of spice.

FOOD PAIRING
Serve with slow-roasted lamb, whose richness suits the wine’s structured palate; grilled ribeye, which meets its dark fruit and tannins; or a beef and mushroom stew, which draws out its savoury side.
