Go to the shop"Fermented with 40% whole clusters and aged in 30% new oak and terracotta amphoras, it’s a floral, enticingly perfumed expression of the grape, with wafts of clove and pepper flavours of black cherry and summer berries and some underlying grip and a balsamic twist."
Ernie Els Wines Proprietor's Syrah 2023 comes from Shiraz vines on north-facing Helderberg slopes, approximately 250 metres above sea level. The grapes were picked by hand in the early morning, and Tim Atkin reports that 40% were fermented as whole clusters. Most of the wine matured in oak barrels, with 30% new wood; a small portion spent time in terracotta amphora. The result is an intriguing meeting of dark fruit, spice and floral perfume.
The winery stands in Stellenbosch’s Helderberg region and takes its name from South African golfer Ernie Els. Opened in 2005, it has long placed particular emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Louis Strydom has been part of Ernie Els Wines for more than two decades and is a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild. This Syrah offers another perspective on the estate: expressive and generous, yet shaped by freshness and a savoury finish.
Set a bottle on the table for a slow evening and let the first glass accompany the start of the conversation. There is plenty to notice as it opens, but no need to hurry towards the next sip.
TASTING NOTES
Ernie Els Wines Proprietor's Syrah 2023 is deep red, with aromas of violet, black pepper, espresso and a hint of smoke. Plum and ripe raspberry give the palate a generous centre, while lively freshness keeps it poised. Forest berries and an earthy note emerge towards the finish, followed by persistent spice and fine-grained tannins. Its savoury edge makes each return to the glass a little different.
FOOD PAIRING
Try grilled lamb chops with rosemary: their char and herbs suit the wine’s peppery, savoury character. Slow-cooked beef shin works with its dark fruit and firm structure. For a meat-free table, mushroom and lentil pie picks up its earthy notes.
