Go to the shopDonkiesbaai Grenache Noir 2025 offers a fresh perspective on Grenache: it is made entirely from Grenache Noir grown in Piekenierskloof, inland from South Africa’s west coast. Bush vines in this hot, dry landscape receive cooling coastal winds. For this vintage, a portion of the fruit is fermented in whole clusters, followed by maturation in seasoned French oak barrels. The result is a red whose fruit and gentle spice invite a place at the table rather than demanding the spotlight.
The name comes from the Engelbrecht family’s west coast holiday retreat, where four generations have spent time by the sea. Jean Engelbrecht began the Donkiesbaai range with Chenin Blanc from Piekenierskloof in 2011 and later added Grenache Noir. The estate describes Grenache Noir as its longest-standing red—a distinctive link between the inland vineyards and the family’s coastal story.
Set a few plates in the middle of the table and pour a glass as the evening settles in. Its lively character leaves space for conversation, a second helping and the pleasure of discovering something a little unexpected.
TASTING NOTES
Donkiesbaai Grenache Noir 2025 opens with pomegranate and cranberry, followed by softer hints of cinnamon, paprika and blackcurrant. Raspberry, redcurrant and sour cherry give the palate a juicy edge, held in check by tangy acidity and a dry finish. The tannins are fine and restrained. A faintly earthy, mineral impression and a little stalky spice bring a savoury turn to the last sip.
FOOD PAIRING
Try roast chicken with herbs; its savoury skin suits the wine’s gentle spice. Grilled pork with paprika draws out its red-fruit character, while a plate of charcuterie makes room for its fresh acidity. For a coastal table, serve it slightly cool alongside grilled prawns.
