De Toren Fusion V 2022 brings together five Bordeaux varieties, led by 53% Cabernet Sauvignon. In this vintage, the estate selected vineyard parcels at different moments: some to retain freshness and red-fruit character, others to build depth. The result is a distinctive meeting of lively fruit and assured structure. Fruit from De Toren’s west-facing vineyards gives this Left Bank-inspired blend its Cabernet-led identity, while the other four varieties add their own dimensions.
The estate sits on the flanks of Stellenbosch’s Polkadraai Hills. Its founders bought the property in 1991; Fusion V followed as De Toren’s first release, from the 1999 vintage. Before planting its Bordeaux varieties, the team studied the farm’s varied soils and matched rootstocks to them. That attention to individual sites still informs the blending: for the 2022 wine, the estate describes choosing harvest times parcel by parcel and matching components with barrels.
Bring it to a table set for a slow evening. There is plenty to explore in the glass, but no need to hurry: pour, share and let the conversation find its pace.
TASTING NOTES
De Toren Fusion V 2022 opens with cranberry and red cherry, followed by blackcurrant, nutmeg, clove and a trace of graphite. It feels polished and juicy on the palate, where cherry and blackberry meet a quieter savoury note. Fresh acidity keeps the fruit defined, while oak remains in the background. Fine, gently gripping tannins carry the wine towards a long finish with a final graphite accent.
FOOD PAIRING
Try rosemary-and-garlic roast lamb: its savoury herbs suit the wine’s gentle spice. Grilled lamb cutlets are another choice, with the char playing against the ripe fruit and fine tannins.
