Go to the shopThe Hartenberg Doorkeeper Reserve Red Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2024 combines 60% Cabernet Sauvignon with 40% Shiraz. Hartenberg earmarks particular vineyard blocks for the blend and selects further parcels through its grading process. First made in 1990, it is now the estate’s best-selling wine. Its label features farm symbols including an Ankole bull, a clover and a sugarbird, alongside an open-door motif for the underground cellar.
Hartenberg is situated on the north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. The estate traces its early cultivation to 1692, when Cunraad Boin and Christoffel Esterhuizzen were permitted to work land there and began planting vines. Esterhuizzen received the title deed to Het Hartenberg in 1704. The estate describes its approach as drawing on long knowledge of its land while continuing to innovate and attend closely to detail.
Pour a glass alongside a generously laid table: let the fruit and spice meet the warmth of a slow evening, with no need to hurry the last sip.
TASTING NOTES
The Hartenberg Doorkeeper Reserve Red Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2024 opens with strawberry and cherry notes, edged by earthy tones and warming spice. Juicy, concentrated fruit carries through the palate, where the spice brings savoury detail. The finish is persistent and led by bright red fruit.
FOOD PAIRING
Try it with grilled lamb chops, slow-cooked beef bourguignon, classic pizza or herb-crusted yellowtail. The lamb and beef suit its savoury depth, while pizza and yellowtail offer a more relaxed, contrasting match.
