Ernie Els Wines Proprietor’s Blend 2022 brings six red varieties together, led by 60% Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Shiraz. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot each contribute 5%. It belongs to the estate’s Proprietor’s Range, which the winery presents as its winemaker’s expression of the property. The estate’s vines grow on the Helderberg slopes, where north- and north-east-facing Cabernet Sauvignon blocks are an important part of its vineyards. This is a blend to explore for its meeting of dark fruit, savoury detail and structure.
The winery takes its name from golfer Ernie Els, who established the wine venture in 1999. Its first vintage followed in 2000, and the Stellenbosch winery opened in 2005. Winemaker Louis Strydom has been central to the project from its early years. Cabernet Sauvignon remains a particular focus across the estate’s wines, giving this Proprietor’s Blend a clear connection to the people and place behind it.
Set a generous table and give the conversation room to wander. Pour a glass as dinner arrives, then return to it between courses: a considered red for an evening worth taking slowly.
TASTING NOTES
Ernie Els Wines Proprietor’s Blend 2022 opens with dark cherry, cassis and plum, followed by graphite, chocolate and a turn of black pepper. The palate is generous with fruit, while fine tannins give the wine shape. A savoury edge carries through the dry finish. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the six-variety blend, with Shiraz adding another dimension to its dark-fruited character.
FOOD PAIRING
Try pepper-crusted steak for its savoury richness, slow-cooked venison for its depth, or a mushroom and lentil pie to meet the wine’s dark-fruit and spice notes.
