Go to the shopKanonkop Estate Pinotage 2023 comes from dry-farmed bush vines on the Simonsberg, aged between 34 and 67 years. It is made entirely from Pinotage. The grapes fermented in open-top concrete vessels, where the skins were punched down by hand; the wine then spent 18 months in French oak barrels, 80% of them new. That patient approach brings the vineyard’s dark fruit and the warmth of oak spice into a richly textured glass.
Kanonkop’s roots as a wine label go back to 1973. The Stellenbosch estate has remained in the Krige family for four generations and is now in the hands of brothers Paul and Johann. Its name recalls a hill on the Simonsberg where a cannon once signalled the arrival of ships in Table Bay. There is history behind the bottle, but this Pinotage makes an immediate impression of its own.
Bring it to a table set for an unhurried supper. Pour a glass as the dishes arrive, then give its fruit, spice and savoury depths time to unfold alongside the conversation.
TASTING NOTES
Kanonkop Estate Pinotage 2023 opens with a deep purple-red colour and aromas of plum, blackberry and mulberry, followed by vanilla, smoke and roasted nuts. Cherry, black fig and pomegranate join the darker fruit on the palate, with chocolate and oak spice adding depth. The tannins feel plush and creamy, while acidity keeps the generous fruit in balance through a lingering finish.
FOOD PAIRING
Try it with char-grilled venison and a plum sauce to echo its dark fruit; an aromatic lamb curry for a meeting of spice and richness; or roast duck, whose savoury character suits the wine’s supple texture.
