Kanonkop Estate Pinotage Late Release 2016 gives a Stellenbosch Pinotage the chance to show what time in bottle can bring. The estate’s 2016 technical sheet describes dry-farmed bush vines aged 30 to 65 years, rooted in decomposed granite and Hutton soils on the Simonsberg. The grapes were fermented in open concrete vessels, with the cap worked by hand, before maturation in French oak. This late release offers an opportunity to explore the wine beyond its youthful, fruit-led character.
Kanonkop’s first wines under its own label came from the 1973 vintage. Four generations of family ownership have brought the estate into the hands of brothers Johann and Paul Krige. Even its name carries a piece of local history: it recalls a cannon fired from a rise on the Simonsberg to announce ships arriving in Table Bay. That connection to place feels apt for a wine made from the estate’s own vines.
Bring a bottle to the table when the evening has room to slow down. Pour a glass, let the conversation settle and enjoy the contrast between generous fruit and the quieter notes that age can reveal.
TASTING NOTES
Kanonkop Estate Pinotage Late Release 2016 brings together dark plum and red-berry flavours with vanilla and sweet spice. Bottle age may draw out the earthier, woodland notes described by the estate, giving the fruit a more savoury edge. There is depth here, but also a balance that lets the different flavours unfold rather than crowd one another.
FOOD PAIRING
Try roast duck with a plum glaze to meet the wine’s dark fruit; venison stew for its savoury depth; rosemary-roasted lamb for a richly flavoured match; or a ginger-and-chilli beef stir-fry for a livelier contrast.
