Description
Stellenbosch Reserve Kweekskool Merlot 2024 takes its name from a building with a long place in the town’s story. Made entirely from Merlot and bearing the Stellenbosch origin designation, it connects a familiar grape with a distinctly local landmark. Stellenbosch Reserve selects grapes from growers across the region rather than relying on a single estate vineyard. That approach gives the range room to express different facets of Stellenbosch, while the Kweekskool name gives this bottle a particular sense of place.
The building was first constructed in 1687 and later housed the theological seminary established in 1859, an event the producer associates with the start of higher education in Stellenbosch. Today it is home to Stellenbosch University’s Theology faculty. Stellenbosch Reserve began in 2005 with one Bordeaux-style blend and has since grown into a seven-wine range. Its wines take inspiration from the town and its surroundings, making this Merlot an invitation to discover some of the history behind the label.
Bring it to a table set for a slow supper: something savoury in the oven, glasses ready, and time to follow the wine from its first dark-fruit impression through to the last sip.
TASTING NOTES
Stellenbosch Reserve Kweekskool Merlot 2024 opens with black cherry and plum, followed by hints of chocolate, cedar and star anise. The palate brings ripe red and dark fruit, with juicy tannins, a creamy feel and enough acidity to keep it lively. Blackcurrant and liquorice linger alongside a savoury touch of spice. It is a generous Merlot with plenty to explore beyond its first impression of fruit.

Try beef meatballs in tomato sauce for a rich, savoury match; mushroom risotto to draw out the wine’s earthy spice; or roast lamb with rosemary alongside its dark-fruit character.
