Go to the shopErnie Els Wines Major Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is a single-variety Stellenbosch red shaped by the estate’s Helderberg vineyards. The Major Series draws on grapes grown on the property, where north-facing slopes give Cabernet Sauvignon a prominent place. For this vintage, the winery’s technical sheet describes separately handled vineyard blocks and a combination of concrete, terracotta and French oak in the cellar. The result invites a closer look at how fruit and structure share the glass.
The estate takes its name from South African golfer Ernie Els. Winemaker Louis Strydom leads its winemaking, and the winery, which opened in 2005, has maintained a particular focus on Cabernet Sauvignon. That connection between person, place and grape gives this Major Series bottling its character without asking it to imitate another region.
Pour it at a table set for a long conversation. Let the first glass settle, then return to it over dinner as its darker fruit and savoury details come forward.
TASTING NOTES
Ernie Els Wines Major Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 opens with dark plum, cassis leaf and cherry, followed by hints of flint, cedar and vanilla. Red and black fruit carry through to a palate with lively acidity and fine, firm tannins. The finish is dry and gently savoury, giving the fruit definition rather than letting it feel heavy.
FOOD PAIRING
Try it with grilled rib-eye steak, whose browned crust suits the wine’s dark-fruit character; slow-braised beef short ribs, which meet its firm tannins; or mushroom and lentil pie, whose earthy filling complements its savoury side.
