Donkiesbaai, a cherished coastal retreat for the Engelbrecht family, inspires wines that capture the essence of South Africa's West Coast. The Hooiwijn is crafted from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes sourced from certified heritage bush vines planted in 1986 and 1988. These unirrigated, dry-land farmed vines thrive at an altitude of 520 meters above sea level in deep sandy soils, benefiting from a warm climate tempered by cooling evening winds. The grapes are harvested over six dates and dried on straw mats for three weeks to concentrate sugars and flavors. After gentle pressing, fermentation is stopped at approximately 10% alcohol, and the wine matures in seasoned 500-liter French oak barrels for six months.
The Hooiwijn presents a luminous pale gold color with vivid aromas of Seville marmalade and honeycomb. On the palate, it is silky sweet, revealing flavors of glazed apricots, candied citrus, and a hint of fresh ginger. The wine is finely balanced, with well-integrated acidity providing a clean, fresh finish.
