Taaibosch Crescendo 2021 is made from Stellenbosch vines at least 20 years old, planted on the Helderberg slopes facing False Bay. Cabernet Franc leads the blend at 54%, with 33% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. After hand-picking, the grapes move by gravity into steel and cement fermenters. Cold soaking and extended contact with the skins are part of the estate’s approach. The vintage sheet describes 13 months in French oak barrels, 30% of them new, followed by another 12 months in large oak and cement vessels.
Crescendo has roots in the former Cordoba estate, where Chris Keet made a Cabernet Franc-led blend beginning with the 1995 vintage. Production later lapsed. The Oddo family acquired the property in 2017, renamed it Taaibosch and appointed Schalk-Willem Joubert to carry the wine forward. The revived Crescendo began with the 2018 vintage, giving this 2021 a distinctive place in a story that spans two eras of Helderberg winemaking.
Bring a bottle to a long dinner, pour a first glass and let the conversation find its pace. Its poise invites attention without demanding ceremony.
TASTING NOTES
Taaibosch Crescendo 2021 opens with a youthful ruby colour and a clear impression of redcurrants and blueberries. Its fruit feels fresh rather than heavy, carried by a creamy, silky texture. Fine, powdery tannins give the palate definition without obscuring the fruit. The finish is dry and lingering, suggesting a wine with room to develop further in bottle.
FOOD PAIRING
Try slow-roasted lamb shoulder, whose savoury richness suits the wine’s fine tannins; charcuterie, where salt plays against its red fruit; or mature cheddar, whose creamy texture contrasts with its dry finish.
