Description

Kershaw Wines Clonal Selection Elgin Pinot Noir 2023 brings together Pinot Noir from five small parcels in Elgin. The estate’s technical sheet identifies three French clones—PN777, PN115 and PN667—and describes separate vinification by clone and soil type. After hand-picking and sorting, the grapes underwent a short maceration before fermentation began spontaneously. The wine then spent around 10 to 11 months maturing in French oak barrels, 38% of them new. It is a detailed approach to a distinctive wine, with each component given room to develop before the final selection.

Richard Kershaw MW founded Kershaw Wines in 2012, initially making Chardonnay and Syrah; Pinot Noir joined the range in 2015. His focus is on wines that express their sites, and he regards vineyard decisions and maturation as central to that aim. In 2021, he joined the Cape Winemakers Guild. Here, that attention to detail offers a way to explore Pinot Noir through the lens of Elgin.

Pour a glass as the evening slows. Its red-fruit warmth and savoury edge invite a pause before the first course arrives—and another look once the plates are cleared.

TASTING NOTES
Ripe strawberry and raspberry lead the nose, followed by cherry, a hint of toast and fragrant spice. An earthy, liquorice-tinged note adds depth. On the palate, vibrant red fruit meets a fuller texture than the estate describes for earlier vintages. Fine but firm tannins give shape, while fresh acidity carries nutmeg and clove nuances towards a long, savoury finish.

FOOD PAIRING
Try roast duck with cherries: the fruit echoes the wine’s red-berry character, while its acidity cuts through the richness. Mushroom risotto draws out its earthy side; herb-roasted chicken suits its gentle spice.
