Kershaw Wines Clonal Selection Elgin Chardonnay 2024 brings together four Chardonnay clones grown in Elgin: CY95, CY96, CY76 and CY548. Tim Atkin notes that 30% new barrels were used, yet describes a wine defined by focus and freshness. The clonal approach gives this bottling its distinctive premise: several expressions of Chardonnay brought together in one carefully shaped wine. Its stone-fruit and lemongrass notes offer a glimpse of that balance before the first sip.
Richard Kershaw founded Kershaw Wines in 2012, beginning with Chardonnay and Syrah. A Master of Wine as well as a winemaker, he places the vineyard at the centre of his approach and pays close attention to how fruit from different clones and soils develops through maturation. He joined the Cape Winemakers Guild in 2021. Elgin remains central to the estate’s work, giving this Chardonnay a clear sense of its origins.
Pour a glass as a long lunch gathers pace, or bring it to the table when a carefully cooked supper deserves an equally considered bottle. There is plenty here to savour without hurrying.
TASTING NOTES
Kershaw Wines Clonal Selection Elgin Chardonnay 2024 is taut and refreshing rather than overtly rich. Lemongrass and delicate stone-fruit flavours sit alongside a light suggestion of nutmeg and vanilla. Oak contributes to the wine’s structure without obscuring its fruit, while a tangy finish leaves a clean, lively impression. It is a Chardonnay with both poise and energy.
FOOD PAIRING
Try lemon-roasted chicken, whose savoury richness meets the wine’s bright acidity; pan-fried sea bass, lifted by its citrus notes; or a mushroom risotto, complemented by its subtle oak spice.
