Old vines give Stellenbosch Reserve Stadsaal Cinsault 2025 its link to the town’s heritage. The grapes fermented in open-top vessels, with a quarter retained as whole bunches and the rest destemmed but left as whole berries. After seven days of fermentation and skin contact, the wine spent twelve months in seasoned French oak barrels. It is a distinctive approach to a red whose appeal lies in its bright fruit and light touch.
The name Stadsaal honours Stellenbosch Town Hall, built in 1939 to designs by Elsworth and Walgate. Its preserved yellowwood ceilings make a fitting point of departure for a wine drawn from older vines. Stellenbosch Reserve itself began in 2005 with a single Bordeaux-style blend and has since grown into a seven-wine range. Here, the estate’s interest in Stellenbosch’s buildings meets its interest in the vineyards around them.
Bring a bottle to a relaxed table, pour a glass and let the conversation run. Its fresh, delicate character makes the moment feel easy rather than ceremonial.
TASTING NOTES
Stellenbosch Reserve Stadsaal Cinsault 2025 has a pale ruby colour and an inviting scent of cranberry, pomegranate, red cherry and rose. Its light-bodied palate brings tart cherry and juicy red fruit into focus, with lively acidity and soft tannins keeping the impression fresh. A little peppery grip and a green-peppercorn note linger on the finish.
FOOD PAIRING
Try watermelon, feta and mint salad: the salty cheese contrasts with the wine’s juicy red fruit. Roast chicken with herbs suits its gentle tannins, while mushroom risotto gives its peppery finish a savoury partner.
