Description

Stellenbosch Reserve Ou Hoofgebou Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 takes its name from the Old Main Building of Stellenbosch University. It is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon grown in Stellenbosch. The estate identifies fruit from Polkadraai and Simonsberg in this wine, bringing different expressions of fruit and structure together. Fermentation in open-top stainless-steel vessels, followed by 14 days on the skins and 12 months in seasoned French oak, gives the wine room to develop its character without placing new oak at the centre of the glass.

The Stellenbosch Reserve builds its range around the town and its landmarks, linking each bottle to a piece of local history. The Ou Hoofgebou was originally built for Stellenbosch College and now houses the university’s Faculty of Law. Beyond the name on the label, the estate selects grapes from different parts of the Stellenbosch region. That approach gives this Cabernet a sense of place while allowing the fruit, tannins and freshness to work together.

Bring it to the table when the evening calls for a substantial meal and a little time to savour it. Its dark-fruited depth makes the first glass inviting; its measured structure gives the conversation reason to continue.

TASTING NOTES
Stellenbosch Reserve Ou Hoofgebou Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 opens with cassis and black cherry, followed by dark chocolate and a restrained suggestion of cedar, nutmeg and liquorice. Its full palate carries dark fruit and a touch of thyme, held in shape by ripe tannins and fresh acidity. A cigar-box note emerges towards the finish. The result is generous without losing definition, with enough structure to make each sip worth lingering over.

FOOD PAIRING
Try it with grilled ribeye, whose richness meets the wine’s firm tannins; rosemary-roasted lamb, which suits its herbal notes; or mushroom and lentil pie, whose savoury depth complements the dark fruit.
