Description

For Donovan Rall, the Rall White is where it all began. First produced in 2008, it remains the cornerstone of Rall Wines and a fascinating reflection of the evolution of South Africa’s new generation of fine wine.

Rather than chasing power, the 2024 vintage is built around precision, freshness and texture. Predominantly Chenin Blanc, complemented by 29% Verdelho and 2% Viognier, the blend brings together varieties that each contribute their own character and personality. Minimal intervention in the cellar allows the fruit and vineyards to speak with remarkable clarity.

The result is a white wine that seems effortlessly composed. Chenin Blanc provides depth and structure, Verdelho injects energy and vibrant acidity, while the small proportion of Viognier contributes an aromatic flourish. The careful élevage builds texture without masking the purity and freshness of the fruit.

It is easy to imagine the Rall White 2024 at the centre of a long summer dinner: a bottle opened as the evening cools, served alongside beautifully prepared seafood and shared around a table with friends. Yet this is equally a wine for quiet contemplation. Give it a large glass and a little time, and its layers gradually unfold.

With 95 points from Tim Atkin MW and further outstanding ratings from Robert Parker Wine Advocate, Winemag.co.za, James Suckling and Platter’s, this is a sophisticated Cape white with the pedigree to reward both immediate enjoyment and careful cellaring.

Tasting notes

The nose opens with citrus, apricot and yellow orchard fruit, followed by more subtle notes of beeswax, chamomile, herbs and delicate oak spice. There is an attractive savoury dimension beneath the fruit that adds complexity.

On the palate, the wine combines impressive concentration with vibrant acidity. Chenin Blanc brings texture and depth, while Verdelho gives the blend its energetic, almost mouth-watering freshness. Citrus peel, ripe stone fruit and mineral nuances lead into a long, precise and gently nutty finish.

A beautifully balanced white that combines texture, freshness and understated complexity rather than sheer weight.

Food pairing recommendations

The freshness and texture of the Rall White 2024 make it exceptionally versatile at the table. It is an elegant partner for grilled or roasted fish, shellfish and seafood, particularly dishes with citrus, herbs or a light buttery sauce.

Try it with grilled sea bass, seared scallops, prawns, roast chicken or creamy poultry dishes. Its acidity and aromatic complexity also make it an excellent match for Asian-inspired cuisine, including lightly spiced dishes with ginger, lemongrass or sweet-and-sour flavours.

For a more indulgent pairing, serve it alongside lobster or turbot with beurre blanc. The wine has enough depth for the richness of the dish while retaining the freshness needed to keep every sip precise and vibrant.
