Description

Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah 2023 comes from seven hectares of Syrah vines on the Stellenbosch estate. The grapes were picked by hand, with 15% retained as whole bunches; individual parcels and clones were fermented separately. Eighteen months in 500-litre French oak barrels, only 16% of them new, gives the wine room to develop its fruit and spice. It is a distinctive way to discover Jean Engelbrecht’s favourite variety.

Rust en Vrede sits on north-facing slopes below the Helderberg, where its vineyards grow in soils derived from granite and sandstone. Its title deed dates to 1694, but the estate’s modern chapter began when Jannie and Ellen Engelbrecht acquired it in 1977. They restored the property and replanted vineyards, and Jannie made the first vintage of that new era in 1978. Today, their son Jean is proprietor, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah remain central to the estate’s red-wine focus.

Bring this bottle to a long dinner, pour it alongside something from the oven and let the conversation take its time. The pleasure here is in the balance: generous fruit, a little floral intrigue and a fresh, gently spiced finish.

TASTING NOTES
Rust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Syrah 2023 opens with wild strawberry, mulberry and blueberry, lifted by a hint of violet. Red and darker fruit carry through the palate, where fine tannins and a measured touch of oak bring spice without obscuring the fruit. Fresh acidity keeps the layers defined, and a redcurrant note gives the finish a lively edge.

FOOD PAIRING
Serve with grilled lamb chops: their savoury edges suit the wine’s dark fruit and spice. Beef short ribs make a generous match for its fine tannins, while a mushroom and lentil pie offers an earthy contrast to its brighter fruit notes.
