The Tokara Reserve Collection Chardonnay 2025 comes from Tokara’s Stellenbosch vineyards on the slopes of the Simonsberg. Their granitic soils contain clay and sandstone, giving this Chardonnay a distinctive place of origin. Winemaker Stuart Botha used three Chardonnay clones—95, 242 and 377—for the 2025 release. Tim Atkin finds it less oak-led than the 2024, while still noting its structure, intensity and toasted character. It is a compelling choice for anyone drawn to Chardonnay with both richness and definition.
Tokara is a family-owned estate shaped by the vision of GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira. Its name joins those of their children, Thomas and Kara. On the Stellenbosch side of the Banghoek Valley, the estate brings together vineyards, olive groves and art, with the Simonsberg as its backdrop. Botha’s approach puts the character of individual vineyard sites at the centre of the winemaking.
Pour the Tokara Reserve Collection Chardonnay 2025 at a long lunch, with a plate of seafood arriving at the table. There is pleasure in taking a little time over the glass: first its citrus brightness, then its softer, savoury side.
TASTING NOTES
The Tokara Reserve Collection Chardonnay 2025 opens with grilled lemon, mandarin blossom and a suggestion of vanilla custard. Ripe yellow citrus carries through the palate, where a silky texture and a touch of caramelised sugar add richness. A saline thread keeps the finish fresh. It is a generous Chardonnay, but its citrus character gives the creamy notes definition.
FOOD PAIRING
Try sole meunière: its buttery sauce suits the wine’s citrus and creamy texture. Soft-shell crab with fennel seafood pasta offers a second match, with the fennel playing against the wine’s fresh, saline finish.
