Go to the shopRust en Vrede Estate Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2024 continues what the estate calls its longest-standing wine tradition. Made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon, it comes from an estate on the lower slopes of the Helderberg, where predominantly north-facing vineyards sit within a warmer pocket of Stellenbosch. The estate’s account of the 2024 growing season describes a dry summer followed by milder March weather and cool nights that allowed the grapes to ripen gradually. In the glass, the result is a Cabernet with dark fruit, firm structure and a welcome thread of freshness.
The property’s recorded history begins in 1694. Jannie and Ellen Engelbrecht acquired it in 1977, restored the old winery and produced the first vintage of its modern era in 1978. Their son Jean is the proprietor today, and Danielle le Roux is the winemaker. Cabernet Sauvignon remains central to the estate’s red-wine focus, linking this bottle to a long-established Stellenbosch tradition.
Bring it to the table when dinner calls for a red with presence. Pour a glass, settle in and let its darker flavours unfold alongside the meal.
TASTING NOTES
Blackcurrant and blackberry lead the aroma, followed by quieter suggestions of tobacco, cedar and liquorice. The palate is generous and full-bodied, carrying ripe currant and mulberry fruit alongside chocolate and a graphite-like edge. Its tannins are firm without feeling harsh, while a sour-cherry brightness keeps the finish fresh. There is plenty of depth here, but the fruit, structure and acidity remain in step.
FOOD PAIRING
Try grilled rib-eye, whose browned crust suits the wine’s dark fruit and firm tannins; slow-roasted lamb shoulder, whose richness meets its lively acidity; or mushroom and lentil pie, whose earthy filling complements its cedar and tobacco notes.
