Go to the shopErnie Els Wines Big Easy Red Blend 2024 draws its six varieties from selected parcels on Stellenbosch's Helderberg slopes. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up half the blend, with Shiraz contributing 30% and Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec adding 5% each. The grapes were picked by hand early in the morning. Some lots were fermented in concrete, while the Shiraz was fermented whole in stainless steel. Maturation involved French oak barrels, a large oak vessel and terracotta amphorae. It is a distinctive meeting of Cabernet structure and Shiraz spice, presented here in a magnum.
The estate takes its name from South African golfer Ernie Els, whose wines are made by Louis Strydom, a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild. Its winery opened to visitors in 2005; the first Big Easy Red Blend, from the 2006 vintage, made its debut in 2008. The Helderberg setting remains central to the wine's character.
Bring this bottle to a long table and give everyone time for a second glass. Its fruit and spice make an inviting centrepiece for an unhurried evening.
TASTING NOTES
Ernie Els Wines Big Easy Red Blend 2024 opens with plum and cherry, followed by cinnamon, vanilla and a hint of cigar box. It has a medium-bodied feel, with rounded tannins and savoury freshness keeping the fruit lively. Cardamom and pepper emerge towards the finish. The result is generous without feeling heavy: a red whose spice and fruit have room to unfold in the glass.
FOOD PAIRING
Try it with grilled beef and pepper sauce, whose savoury richness suits the wine's fruit and spice; lamb with rosemary, which complements its herbal edge; or mushroom risotto, whose earthy flavours meet its gentle oak notes.
