Morgenster Wine Estate

Morgenster - more than 300 years tradition.

Since 1711 already Morgenster is inspiring people through its combination of beautiful landscape, excellent terroir and one of the great manor houses of the Western Cape. Today Morgenster is an Italian - French Partnership in the heart of South African vineyards.

Morgenster Estate

Morgenster is situated on the foothills of the Helderberge close to Somerset West. In 1992 Giulio Bertrand bought the estate which was long time ago a part of Vergelegen. The former textile entrepreneur changed his home from Piedmont to the Cape. Giulio Bertrand's philsophy was to only produce the best. That's why he sought advice from experts and they suggested that Morgenster's terroir was perfect for red wine grape varieties and olives. Shortly after that he planted the first olive trees. Still today Morgenster is the leading South African Olive Oil producer. About 40 ha are planted with olive trees.

On the wine side Giulio Bertrand partnered with well known Pierre Lurton from Cheval Blanc. In 1994 they planted mainly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a bit of Petit Verdot. The idea was to produce top qualtity of Bordeaux style wines.

A few years later Giulio Bertrand wanted a bit of Italy in the vineyards and had some Sangiovese and Nebbiolo planted. These varieties are today the main component of the Italian Collection.
